Expectations of Library Users
Sopchyshyn Library: Expectations of Library Users
Borrowers Are Asked to Respect

Other Library Users: the library is meant to be a place conducive to individual study and research. Noisy activity, phone calls, loud conversations, or visiting with others over a length of time does not contribute to such an environment. Please keep interactions short and quiet, or use the college’s common area as an alternative space to visit or take calls. Please note that the library has a room on the mezzanine level intended for group study.
Library Staff: the library staff are available to help users with research questions, or circulation/library related issues. They strive to respect library users by leaving them to their work, and to insure theirs is a positive and productive experience of the library. They work conscientiously in the provision of services and collections. Please respect library staff and the work they do.
Property: the college’s housekeeping and maintenance staff work diligently to ensure that the library is a clean and safe space. Please do not consume food in the library. Clear study areas of paper and cups and other garbage. Do not mistreat furnishings, computers or artwork. Use the study tables and chairs the way they are intended to be used.

Collections: much time, expertise and money go into the building of library collections. Take responsibility for the care and use of checked out items. Sometimes a person may react strongly to a book, and ask why it is in the library. Please respect that even controversial titles have their place, and may be of use to someone else. If a title is offensive, just put it back on the shelf, and find one that is more helpful. Concerns may also be expressed to the librarian.

Copyright: the library upholds Canadian copyright law, and warns users against infringement. Students are responsible to honour copyright. However, the library also recognizes the fact that users also have rights when copying material. Guidelines are posted on the library website and above the photocopier. Questions may also be referred to the librarian.

NTC Library Policies: the library has policies specific to its collections and services. Please be aware of them, or ask staff. Be sure to read the Library Core Values statement.

NEOS Consortium Borrowing Policies: most of the library's circulation policies are shared by all NEOS libraries. This ensures consistent and fair use of items consortium wide.
