Who We Are!

In 1999, funding for a library and seminary residence at Newman Theological College was provided by Wilfred, Helen, Clinton, and Geneva Sopchyshyn. The Sopchyshyns were committed to Catholic Education, and spent their careers serving Alberta's Catholic schools. Their generosity is esteemed as a legacy of faith and hope for future generations at the college and seminary.

The library and seminary residence, were originally built at the former location of Newman Theological College and St. Joseph's Seminary on St. Albert Trail. However, due to the development of the Henday Ring Road, the college and seminary moved to their newly built facilities on the campus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton Pastoral Centre. The Sopchyshyn family continues as the library's namesake.

The Sopchyshyn Family Library is an academic library that supports the curriculum of NTC's degree programs. Library policies, services and collections are guided by the library's core values. They define who we are as a library and how we support the college's educational mission. The library is also a member of the NEOS library consortium - a group of libraries, both academic and government, sharing services, expertise and collections between member libraries. We have been a member since 1999.
The library serves the laity, and men in formation to the priesthood. The collection numbers around 55,000 volumes and is divided between the main floor and the mezzanine. The library also contains study spaces, casual reading areas, a computer area, and the Jesu Caritas seminar room.

In addition, the Franciscan Friary mural is installed on the main floor. Also on the main floor, is a copy of Van Gogh's Irises by the Vatican Mosaic Studio (shown above) - a gift by Grant and Joan Fairley in memory of Rev. Michael McCaffery, a former President of Newman Theological College.
